About St. Patrick's Primary School

St Patrick’s Primary School was built in 1958 and greatly extended in 1981.  It occupies a central position on the Main Street of the town. The present accommodation consists of eight attractive and very well-equipped classrooms each with a Interactive Touch Panel, a Principal’s Office, Secretary’s Office, Vice-Principal’s office, Staffroom, an Assembly Hall/Gymnasium, Computer Suite and a Learning Support Room.  We have recently installed a state-of- the-art ‘Chill Out Zone’ where children can go to experience a calm and reflective environment.

The Foundation Stage pupils have a spacious and well-resourced area, well equipped to support the many aspects of learning through play.  They also have access to their  its own playground which includes a range of playground marking, resources and an outdoor gym.

Our main playground has also benefited from a recent extension with a range of markings to ensure a variety of play opportunities.

The school kitchen has a spacious dining area which can cater for up to 130 children per sitting.

The present teaching staff of St Patrick’s consists of the Principal plus nine permanent teachers.  The teaching staff are well supported by thirteen assistants.  The Primary 1 and 2 classes each have a designated Classroom Assistant.

As a Catholic school, our aim is to establish a school community of learning in harmony, a community of prayer and worship, a community of caring, sympathy, understanding and tolerance.  We see the school embracing both religion and life and, at the same time through a broad and balanced curriculum, giving every child the opportunities and experiences necessary to acquire the knowledge, skills and understanding which they will need to reach their full potential.

We place great emphasis and importance on extra-curricular activities.  Our after-school provision, which is always well attended, includes sporting activities such as football (Gaelic and soccer), camogie, drama, computers and jujitsu. We also have a music club and school choir. Classes from Primary 5 to Primary 7 enjoy a swimming programme at Downpatrick Leisure Centre at various times of the year.

Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in all parts of their children’s education.  Indeed, the high standards of work and discipline are achieved by nurturing strong links with parents.  These links have been developed to include a Parents Support Group which plays a valuable role in school life.  The school is at the heart of the community and is actively involved in parish life.  Meetings, newsletters, the school Facebook page and App keep parents fully informed.

Educational visits are regarded as a very important element in a child's learning and various opportunities are provided in the school year.  There are also strong links with the local Controlled Primary School, established through a very successful Shared Education Programme which aims to improve relationships in our community and share learning opportunities in each other’s schools. We also value the establishing of relationships with the rest of our community as an important way to support the curriculum and enrich its work.

There is a designated school uniform, which is strongly supported.  Levels of attendance and punctuality are very good.
