Rainbow News February

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the February edition of Rainbow News.

We had a busy month in January with our ‘ice’ theme. We made ice balloons, ice-cream and ice glasses. fluffy snowmen and penguins. Then to keep warm, we made hot chocolate, and warm bread. We made bird cake to feed the small birds. We had a visit from Jen Banks from the RSPB who gave us tips on bird watching.  You can see what happened by looking on the photo gallery.

The dental nurse is coming to talk to the children about looking after our teeth. You will receive some important information to share with your child regarding our Dental Health Award Scheme.

Little Red Hen    Story of the month is The Little Red Hen.

  •     Colour of the month is red.
  •     Shape of the month is the heart.
  • Rhyme of the month is ‘Miss Polly had a Dolly.’

Lollypop Woman

We are introducing a Road Safety element into outdoor play. The local lollipop man will be coming to talk to the children about his job. We will be looking at how people keep us safe when we are out and about and dressing up as police officers, fire fighters, paramedics and creating a building site with an emphasis on safety.

BooksWe had a successful visit to the local library  where the children heard stories and rhymes from the staff . It was an enjoyable time for all and we are planning  another visit  next term.

At circle time this month we are focusing on the theme of ‘Kindness’ as part of our Emotional Intelligence programme. We have been talking about kind and unkind words we all might say to each other. Talk to your child about how it feels when someone is kind (or unkind) and how important it is to say please and thank you to each other.

We are in the news! The local newspapers ‘The Mourne Observer’ and ‘The Down Recorder’ were invited to the Nursery Unit to take photographs of our new computer. You will find them displayed on the ‘Parent’s’ Board.

Some important dates include:

Days when the nursery is closed are as follows:

13th-17th February –mid- term break

Monday 20th February –Staff Development day

‘Parent/Teacher meeting’-these will take place in early March. Details to follow.

Included in Rainbow News are some rhymes and songs linked with our themes you may like to say and sing with your child.

DollyMiss Polly had a dolly

Miss Polly had a dolly who was sick, sick, sick, sick.

So she phoned for the doctor to be quick, quick, quick.

The doctor came with his bag and his hat.

He knocked on the door with a rat-a-tat-tat!

He looked at the dolly and he shook his head;

And he said “Miss Polly –put her straight to bed”.

He wrote on a paper for a pill, pill pill.

“I’ll be back in the morning –yes I will, will will”.

Doctor Foster

Doctor Foster went to Gloucester in a shower of rain.

He stepped in a puddle, right up to his middle-

And never went there again.

Once I saw a little bird

Once I saw a little bird go hop, hop, hop.

And I said little bird won’t you stop, stop, stop!

I went over to the window to say “how do you  do”?

But he shook his little tail and away he flew!

Traffic LightsTwinkle , twinkle, traffic light

Twinkle, twinkle Traffic light, standing in the corner bright.

When it’s green it’s time to go.

When it’s red it’s stop you know.

Twinkle, twinkle traffic light, standing in the corner bright.

Five little Fire fighters

Five little fire fighters all in a row,

One, two, three, four, five they go.

Hop on the engine with a shout; Quicker than a wink the fire is out!

(4,3,2,1-repeat with decreasing numbers)

Boa ConstrictorThe Boa Constrictor song

Oh I’m being eaten by a Boa Constrictor, a Boa Constrictor, a Boa Constrictor,

Oh I’m being eaten by a Boa Constrictor, and I don’t like it one little bit!

Oh no! He’s up to my toe.

Oh gee, he’s up to my knee.

Oh fiddle, He’s up to my middle.

Oh heck, he’s up to my neck.

Oh dread! He’s up to my..... (GULP!)

Try this as you say the rhyme---(Hands together touching only at the base of

the palms. Touch tips of fingers in sequence beginning with the thumbs)

Thank you for your continuing support.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs  C. O’Hare (class teacher).

Mrs L. Connolly (Nursery assistant)
