April 2017

Trocaire 2016 – Climate Change, Climate Justice!

It is great to see the children working so hard to raise much needed funds for Trocaire over Lent.   We thank our parents for supporting the children in their fundraising efforts and ask that you always encourage them to think of others who are less fortunate than us. Sincere thanks to everyone who is making our Lenten charity work such a huge success.

Sacramental Celebrations

Congratulations to the P7 class who had their Service of Light on 30th March as part of their preparations for Confirmation. They provided beautiful singing, excellent readings and, most importantly, a deep understanding of what the Service of Light is all about.

Preparations are now well underway for Confirmation which takes place on Wednesday, 26th April in St Patrick’s Church at 6.00pm.

School will close at 1.00pm to facilitate preparations for the ceremony.

First Confession

Congratulations to the boys and girls from our school who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time on 8th March 2017. The children worked extremely hard to prepare for their special occasion and it was lovely to see the respect and reverence they showed during the ceremony. Our thanks are extended to Mrs Smith, Miss White, Mrs Hamilton, Mrs Kerr and Miss Walsh for all they did to make this occasion so meaningful to the children. We hope that this will be the first of many times that the children will experience this very important sacrament.

Olympic Handball Success

Congratulations to our boys’ and girls’ Olympic Handball teams who have qualified for the SE Region Finals on 5th May in Lisburn Leisureplex. Good luck to both teams!!!

Lion King

The after-school Drama Club from our school and Ballynahinch Primary School are really enjoying coming together on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons and are working hard work to prepare for their performances of “The Lion King” in:

  • St      Patrick’s Primary School at 2.00pm AND 7.00pm on Tuesday, 4th      April;
  • Ballynahinch      Primary School at 2.00pm AND 7.00pm on Thursday 6th April.

On the 4th our own pupils will be invited to stay and watch the 2.00pm matinee performance (free). Tickets for Adults are now on sale (£5 each) and can be purchased from the school.

Annual Jumble Sale

Every year the children are encouraged to bring in unwanted items to the jumble sale which takes place on Tuesday, 12thApril 2017. Parents are asked to thoroughly check any item that is being brought in by their child, ensuring that it is safe for use. Please check all of the pockets of purses, handbags etc. to make sure that they are empty.

Regular and punctual attendance is a crucial factor in every child’s learning and in St Patrick’s most parents recognise this, making sure that their child’s attendance is as high as possible. However, for some children, attendance is an issue and so pupil attendance is being more carefully monitored this year.

Whilst we appreciate a telephone call to inform us if a child is going to be absent this should be supported by a written note sent into school on the pupils return. Any absence without a written note is now being followed up by the admin staff of the school.

Parents are encouraged not to take family holidays during term time!

Healthy Break

Recent research has highlighted the importance of eating a healthy break as it contributes to concentration, attention and learning. Please continue to support your child by sending fruit, vegetables or a bread based snack (no sweet fillings) with your child for break time.

Parent Support Group Cake Sale

St Patrick’s Parent Support Group wish to invite you to their Cake Sale in Parish Centre after 11am Mass on Sunday, 23rd April 2017. Please come along and support their fundraising efforts. All donations will be gratefully accepted!

Take Ten

We were delighted to see how well the children responded to our recent ‘Take Ten’ focus. Please encourage your child to take some time out to ‘Take Time and Breathe’ – it only takes two minutes! By doing so you are giving him/her an invaluable strategy to help cope with stressful situations. Find out more on

Lexia Club

Is your child a member of Lexia Club? If so, this fantastic software can be accessed at home. It is recommended that, to get full benefit of the programme, children should be using Lexia for at least an hour per week. Help us to help your child by building in some time each week for your child to work on Lexia!

Emotional Intelligence

This month the children will focus on Friendship. Why not take a little time to talk to your child about what they are learning about in school.
