St Patrick’s Primary School, Ballynahinch

March 2016

World Book Day

World Book Day takes place on Thursday, March 3rd and we have a range of activities planned for that day – more details to follow. We hope that the children will enjoy our focus on reading and that the day will encourage them to read that little bit more.

Don’t forget to use your book token to buy a book of your choice!

Hairspray Junior

The after-school Drama Club from our school and Ballynahinch Primary School are really enjoying coming together on Thursday and Friday afternoons and are working hard work to prepare for their performances of “Hairspray Junior” in:

  • St Patrick’s Primary School at 3.00pm      AND 7.00pm on Tuesday 15th March;
  • Ballynahinch Primary School at 3.00pm      AND 7.00pm on Wednesday 16th March.

On the 16th our own P.4-7 pupils will be invited to stay and watch the 3.00pm matinee performance (free). Tickets for Adults are now on sale (£3 each) and can be purchased from the school.

Parent Meetings

It was great to see such an excellent attendance by parents at our recent Parent Teachers meetings. Thank you for your support and your commitment to your child’s education. Please remember that, should you have any queries or wish to discuss anything, no matter how small, you can contact the school and we will be only to happy to help!

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Environmental Youthspeak

Well done to Caoimhe McKibben and Rachel Adams who represented our school in the Environmental Youthspeak competition on Thursday, 25th February in the

Sean Holywood Arts Centre, Newry. Their speech was fantastic and they delivered the message of the importance of looking after our environment so well. We are all very proud of them.

 Peace Proms

On Sunday, our Peace Proms choir joined 31 other schools from around Northern Ireland in the SSE Odyssey and produced a concert not to be forgotten. The singing and dancing of our boys and girls was wonderful. It was a real privilege to have been part of the occasion.

A word of thanks must go to the many family members who attended the concert. Your support and positive feedback was greatly appreciated.

A special word of thanks must also go to Miss Delaney and Miss McCrickard for their hard work in organising our involvement in the event and for preparing the children. Thanks also to Mrs O’Hare and Mrs Mahon, and our parents, Mrs Sharvin, Mrs S J Smith and Mrs D Smith for giving up their time to help supervise the children on the day.

Olympic Handball

Our P6 girls and boys handball teams will take part in series three of the Olympic Handball competition on Friday, 18th March. Good luck boys and girls!

Multi-cultural Week

As part of our continued work on Inclusion and Diversity a Multicultural week has been organised from 14th to 18th March 2016. A range of activities and workshops will take place to celebrate the Irish culture and the other cultures of our school. Parents are asked to make a £2 donation per child towards to cost of the tutors attending throughout the week. Further details of the events planned will be circulated.

First Confession

Congratulations to the boys and girls from our school who recently received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. The children worked extremely hard to prepare for their special occasion and it was lovely to see the respect and reverence they showed during the ceremony. Our thanks are extended to Mrs Smith, Mrs Magee, Miss Kilmartin and Mrs Hamilton for all they did to make this occasion so meaningful to the children. We hope that this will be the first of many times that the children will experience this very important sacrament.

Annual Jumble Sale

Every year the children are encouraged to bring in unwanted items to the jumble sale which takes place on Tuesday, 22nd March 2016. Parents are asked to thoroughly check any item that is being brought in by their child, ensuring that it is safe for use. Please check all of the pockets of purses, handbags etc. to make sure that they are empty.

Emotional Intelligence

This month’s Emotional Intelligence focus is on St Patrick and Perseverance. Why not take a little time to talk to your child about what they are learning on the saint and virtue for the month?

The P6 class will perform their assembly on the themes on Wednesday, 16th March at 9.30am. Parents of the P6 class are welcome to come along.

Clothing Bank

If you are Spring cleaning perhaps you could donate your unwanted clothing to charity by using our Clothing Bank.

Breakfast Club

Breakfast Club continues daily at a cost of £1 with breakfast and morning supervision without breakfast at 50p. PLEASE NOTE THAT BREAKFAST CLUB IS NOT OPEN UNTIL 8.10am!

Story Sacks

It is great to see the success of the Story Sacks in the P1 and P2 classes and to see so many parents actively getting involved in supporting their child’s learning. P1 and P2 parents, if you haven’t already done so please sign up to the Story Sack programme – Your child is missing out!

Missing Reading Books!

As we have noticed that quite a number of our reading books are missing parents are asked to take a little time to look for any books that may be left at home and send them into school. These materials cost thousands of pounds so we need everyone to look after them carefully and make sure they are returned.

Coffee Morning and Spring Sale

Our Parents Support Group invite you to attend their Coffee Morning and Spring Sale in the Parish Centre after Mass on Sunday, 3rd April. Please come along as support our school!

A reminder, that parents should regularly check their child for head lice and treat immediately!
