The two P1 classes are on the top corridor. The P2, P3, P3/4 and P4/5 classes are on the middle corridor and the P5, P6 and P7 classes are all on the bottom corridor.

CURRICULUM COMPLAINTS

 

Where parents consider that the curriculum provision for their child is not satisfactory they are invited to express their concern to the school through the following stages:

Stage 1            -           Informal – speak to the teacher concerned

Stage 3            -           Formal – Make a written complaint to the Principal

Stage 4 -          Formal – Make a written complaint to the Board of Governors

Stage 5-           Formal - Written request to Chairperson to have case heard by Appeals Sub-Committee of Board of Governors

Links with Parents

Parents are kept informed about the life of the school and their child’s education in many ways. Letter, newsletters, leaflets, and the school website regularly inform parents of the daily events that take place throughout the year.

As well as the annual parent/teacher meetings, teachers are actively encouraged to play their part in the ‘Open Door’ approach of our school and endeavour to pass on information to parents informally ‘at the gate’ in the morning or at the end of the school day or via telephone.

If you need to speak with a teacher to discuss any issue concerning your child please do not hesitate to arrange a suitable appointment outside of class contact time.

School Development

School Development is crucial to any school and in St Patrick’s we are constantly looking to raise the standard of provision for our children. Early in the first term areas for development will be identified, discussed and agreed. Parental involvement is very much valued and, as part of the consultation process, parents are asked to inform the principal of any areas which they feel require development within the school.

After consultation, parents will be informed early in term one of the main areas of focus for the 2015/16 school year.

Other curricular issues

Our Learning Support Teacher is Mr Caughey.

He will be providing additional teacher support to some children following consultation with class teachers and analysis of all evidence. This support may take the form of withdrawal or team teaching.

Reading Partnership will also be available through our classroom assistants and volunteer parents, if required.

There may also be some additional teaching support provided to children who have specific difficulties e.g. Down Outreach Support Service, Speech and language support, Longstone Behaviour Support. This is funded directly by SEELB.

Health and Safety

Earrings

For reasons of health and safety the wearing of loop type earrings is not permitted as they pose a safety hazard to the wearer in the school environment. However children may wear studs when in school. Again this is for reasons of safety. During PE no jewellery is permitted and any child wearing jewellery will not be permitted to take part in P.E. lessons.

Bottles and hot drinks

Drinks should not be brought to school in glass bottles because of the obvious dangers of broken glass. Flasks containing hot drinks should also be avoided as there is a risk of burns. Under no circumstances can any member of staff provide boiling water for food e.g., Pot Noodles etc.

Concussion

If your child suffers a concussion in school or outside school, it is vitally important that you keep us informed so that we are aware of the potential dangers and any restrictions that may apply to the activities your child is permitted to do.

The ‘Recognise and Remove’ leaflet produced by the Department of Education and the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure is available on the Department of Education’s website http://www.deni.gov.uk and provides guidance on the signs to look out for.

Arrival and Collection

School is open from 8.45am daily. P1-P2 children should go to the upper playground where they will be supervised by a class teacher. Parents should not enter the upper playground and should leave their child to the gate at the top of the steps. For new P1 pupils only we will be flexible for the first four weeks and then would ask parents to leave these children to the top gate where a teacher will receive them.

P3-P7 children should go to the lower playground, where again supervision is provided. Parents should leave their child at the main pedestrian gate. Parents are asked to ensure that their child does not arrive to school prior to 8.45am unless he/she is attending the Breakfast Club.

 

After leaving a child to their designated area parents should leave the school grounds!

At the end of the school day parents collecting P1-P3 children should wait at the bottom of the steps to the upper playground. Your child will be escorted from his/her classroom to you for collection.

Parents of P4-P7 children should wait in the main playground for their child to he escorted out of the building.

To ensure that every child gets home safely it is important that the school is made aware of who has permission to collect a child, other than those with parental responsibility. If a child is being collected by someone other than his/her parent please notify the school in writing in good time of this change to routine. Parents should be reminded that no person under the age of 16 is permitted to collect a child.

Anyone collecting children or waiting for older pupils to come out should keep young children under close supervision at all times and prevent them from running around the yard, up the steps or up the grass banks.

CAR PARK AND DROP-OFF POINT

 

PARKING PROVISION

If you drop or collect your child by car, you can park in Edengrove when no legal parking spaces are available near the school entrance. You should be aware that there is a charge for parking in this area.

Please note that should you use this car park you are expected to make your way to the playground to collect your child at the end of the school day. No child from P1-P5 will be permitted to leave the school grounds unaccompanied. P6 and 7 pupils will be permitted to walk unaccompanied to Edengrove car park provided this request is made in writing to the school.

If for some reason you are unable to leave your car e.g. Ill health or a young baby, perhaps you could arrange for someone who you are familiar with and who is also collecting a child from school to accompany your child to your car.

In the interests of safety immediate entry and exit access to and from the school at all times is absolutely essential. No-one should obstruct this entry at any time.

For the drop-off point to work it is vital that it is used for that purpose only. Parents should not park in this area for any reason. This should also be made clear to others with whom you have made arrangements for the collection of your child eg Taxi, other family member. Should you need to accompany a young child to school you should continue to use Edengrove car park or roadside parking.

Access to the school continues to be via the pedestrian footpath and pupils should be reminded of this to ensure that they do not put their safety at risk by walking through a full car park.

At the end of the school day vehicles should not park in the drop-off point as this will result in a build-up of cars unable to gain entry or vacate the area.

Parents are asked not to let children stand on the railings at the front of the school for safety reasons.

Murray’s Terrace Entrance

Parents are asked not to drive into the Murray’s Terrace entrance as this is a restricted road. However, you may access the school on foot through this entrance. Should you feel you have exceptional circumstances which should be accommodated please contact the Principal.

Wet Days

On wet and cold mornings parents should escort their child to the main school entrance. The children will then go to the Assembly Hall between 8.45 a.m. and 8.55a.m.to be supervised. Parents are asked not to go into the school with their child unaccompanied.

 

Walking home from school

Only P6 and P7 children will be released to walk home unaccompanied. Should you wish your child to walk home from school please make this request in writing to the school.

Security of the school building

If a child is being collected during the school day, parents are asked to go to reception and wait for him/her to be escorted to the reception area.

If for any reason a parent or visitor to the school has had access to the school building approved they will be issued with a visitors badge which must be worn at all times.

Under no circumstances should any parent enter the school without permission. Access to the school building by parents should only be through the main doors.

Emergency contacts

Parents are asked to inform the School Secretary should there be any change to emergency contact numbers. Keep mobile phone numbers current as a text message service is used to notify parents of any changes to arrangements.

Mobile Phones

It is preferred that children do not bring mobile phones to school or school related activities. However, should a parent feel that it is necessary for their child to carry a mobile phone they should inform the Principal. On entering school the phone should be handed over to a member of staff for safe-keeping. During the school day the phone will be kept in a secure place and returned at the end of the day. Should a child bring a phone into school it should be switched off entering school grounds and not turned on again until leaving.

Attendance

School starts at 8.55am each day and parents are asked to ensure that their child is in school at this time.

Good attendance and punctuality is crucial to a child’s education and parents should make sure that their child has the highest possible school attendance. However, if you feel that your child is ill and unfit to complete the full school day, then he/she should remain at home to recover. This will also mean that illnesses are not passed on to other children.

I wish to remind you that the reason for a child’s absence from school must be recorded. Therefore I would ask parents to inform the class teacher in writing as to the reason for their child’s absence.

Should a child’s attendance show concern the principal will work in partnership with the parent in an effort to improve levels. If this is not successful the support of the Education Welfare Office may be sought.

Every effort should be made to ensure that there is a regular and consistent attendance. Permission will not be granted for children to take a holiday during term time.

Punctuality

It is also very important that your child arrives to school on time for the start of the school day. It gives them a familiar routine, ensures that they do not miss any of their lessons and avoids disruption to other children in the classroom. Parents are encouraged to make every effort to ensure that their child is not late for school.

Should there be an occasion when your child is late the main entrance of the school should be used. No access will be given to children through the side doors of the school after 9.00am. P1, 2 and 3 teachers have found themselves in the situation where a very young child has come unaccompanied by an adult to the side door after the start of school. In the best interests of the child they have had to leave their classroom to let them in, causing disruption to their teaching. If you are late bringing your child to school please ensure that he or she is handed over safely to a member of staff and not left at the bottom of the steps to make their way up to the side entrance.

Homework

To ensure that homework is done to a satisfactory standard and to keep you informed of your child’s progress it is important that you supervise homework. It is expected that a parent sign his/her child’s completed homework.

SCHOOL MEALS

School Dinners

School Dinners are available at a cost of £2.40. Snacks are no longer available as part of our ‘Healthy Eating’ Policy. However ‘snack type’ meals up to the value of £2.40 can be made up if the child does not like that day’s dinner menu.

Menus are available from the school outlining the choices of meal or snack type meals.

Parents on benefits may be entitled to free school meals. Applications are available in the school.

 

School Milk

School milk has been introduced and can be purchased at a cost of 20p per day. As milk has to be ordered well in advance a block payment is required. Further information will be circulated.

Breakfast Club

The breakfast club will run again from Tuesday, 1st September from 8.10 a.m. Since this is funded from outside the normal school budget there is a charge of £1.00 per morning to pay for the supervision and food or 50p should you require supervision only. Entry to the Breakfast Club is via the side door of the PE hall.

 

Healthy Break

We continue to be a ‘healthy eating at break-time school’ and at break-time all children eat fruit and/or vegetables or a bread-based snack.

Please note the recommendations of the Public Health Agency:

…white or wholemeal bread, rolls or baguettes, toast, plain bagels, wheaten, soda, potato or pitta bread, spread thinly with a little margarine, low-fat spread or butter; plain bread sticks or plain crackers, a small sandwich with a sugar free filling such as tomato, tuna, chicken or cheese.

Not suitable:

Sugary spreads, including jam, honey, marmalade, chocolate spread or peanut butter.

No cereal bars, or sweetened breads and pastries eg pancakes, scones (plain and fruit) fruit bread, malt loaf, brioche, croissants and Danish pastries as these contain lots of sugar and/or fat and salt.

 

Parents are asked to support this approach by ensuring that their child brings in the appropriate break.

Drinking Water

Children are actively encouraged to
drink water regularly. New water bottles will again be provided for each child and parents are asked to ensure that their child brings in a filled bottle of fresh water each day. There is a ‘water dispenser’ in the school where children can refill their bottles as they need. Research has shown that a good intake of water can help with concentration and is much better for children than fizzy drinks. Parents can support the school by ensuring that only water is put into the bottles and encouraging their child to bring it into the classroom each morning so that it is there to drink throughout the day. Replacement bottles (£1) and lids (10p) can be purchased from the school.

Uniform

 

Children are expected to wear the school uniform. This consists of a white polo shirt with embroidered crest and green jumper with embroidered crest, grey trousers for boys and girls or grey skirt for girls. Skirts should be of an appropriate length to ensure that children can sit comfortably. Shoes should be appropriate for play in the school playground and it is preferable that they are black. White knee-high socks should be worn by girls wearing skirts or grey tights. To avoid unnecessary distress for children, all items of uniform should be clearly marked for easy identification.

Rhoda Stewart will continue to provide the school uniform. The uniform can also be purchased from Tesco-Online. Just follow the link on the school website. As well as the items listed above additional non-compulsory items are available.

Parents on benefits may be entitled to a uniform grant. Applications are available in the school.

PE

Any child not participating should have a note from their parent. Pupils with no PE kit will not be permitted to do PE. Teachers will inform parents by letter should this situation arise repeatedly. Older children with independence will record the learning from the PE lesson whilst observing should they not be participating.

Pupils with no swimming gear will not be permitted to go swimming and arrangements will be made so that they can work independently in another class.

Changing for PE

P1 for first two terms – remove jumper and put on trainers

P1 Term 3 - change into shorts

P2 and 3 change into a T shirt, shorts and trainers

P4-7 change into a T shirt, shorts and trainers.

Children should not wear jogging bottoms for PE except outside in the winter months.

P1-3 can keep their PE gear in school but P4-7 should take it home to ensure good personal hygiene.

TRANSPORT

 

Parents may apply for a school bus pass if their child lives two miles or more from the school, they live along the school bus route and St Patrick’s is their nearest primary school. Applications are available from the Transport department, SEELB.

Should you not reside along the school bus route but meet the other criteria you may apply for financial assistance to the Transport department, SEELB. These forms should be completed at the end of the school year.

 

 

SACRAMENTS

 

As a Catholic school we work in partnership with parents to prepare our children for the sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation. It is important that we have a record of your child’s baptismal information and would ask that you provide a copy of his/her baptismal certificate on starting school for our records (This only applies to children baptised outside of the parish of Magheradroll).

We work hard to create an ethos where children care and support each other. Sacramental celebrations are an important part of our school and children will be asked on occasion to attend to sing as part of the choir. We would ask that parents make every effort for their child to attend these celebrations. If everyone works together then every child will benefit when the time comes for them to receive their various sacraments.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Pastoral Care

 

The following information is a summary of the Pastoral Care and Child Protection Policies of St Patrick’s. Copies are available on request and can also be viewed on the school website. We believe that consultation is important so if you have any views on this summary or the Pastoral Care and Child Protection Policies please contact the school.

 

General Aim of our Pastoral Care Policy

We aim to promote a caring school which values all who are part of it, creating an atmosphere of mutual respect in which children feel secure and happy and all staff work together as a team, supportive of one another and sensitive to each other’s needs.

 

RIGHTS RESPONSIBILITIES

Pupils have the right to;

*Be educated in a safe and   stimulating environment.

*Be treated fairly, consistently   and with respect.

*Work and play within clearly   defined and fairly administered codes of conduct.

*Be consulted about matters that   affect them, and have their views listened to and, as far as possible, acted   upon.

To enjoy these rights pupils must;

*Respect the rights of others and   therefore not engage in bullying.

*Ensure they do not keep other   pupils from being taught or from learning.

*Cooperate with teachers,   assistants and with their peers, showing respect at all times.

*Abide by the school rules on   discipline and acceptable behaviour.

PROMOTING POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR

In St Patrick’s Primary School we strive to create an ethos which fosters effective learning, both within and about the school. Such a climate is best promoted through focusing on the creation and maintenance of good relationships: among the staff, between staff and pupils; among the pupils and their peers; between parents and the school; and between the school and the community.

We work hard to create a positive ethos where pupils feel confident and self-esteem is promoted; they are encouraged to value one another, value their school; and show a strong sense of belonging to the school.

We focus on recognising and rewarding those pupils who behave well. Although sanctions will be used when necessary, our policy will concentrate on achieving the right framework for discipline and the right ethos in the school and nursery so that sanctions become increasingly unnecessary. Every day we will try to ‘catch a child doing something good’ and praise them for this.

Rewards

In St. Patrick’s we apply a system of rewards, which are intended to be fair and effective for all of our pupils. They are aimed at promoting and reinforcing good behaviour and promoting self- esteem. They encourage each pupil to take responsibility for his/her actions and to have their efforts recognized and rewarded.

Our rewards include

  • a quiet word of encouragement.
  • a written comment on the      child’s work pointing to the merit of the work.
  • a visit to another      teacher/Principal for commendation or other form of reward.
  • a public word or praise for the      child in front of the class or at assembly.
  • a star/points award      system 
  • public acknowledgement by      presentation at assembly or by giving the child some special task or      responsibility.
  • the giving of marks, grades or      assessments by the teacher for good behaviour as well as good work.
  • In St Patrick’s there are      special certificates for each class, with a chosen focus, presented      formally at First Friday assemblies. Mother Teresa Cup for outstanding      kindness and consideration for others and Head teacher Shield for      outstanding work, presented monthly.
  • Using the school reports and      Records of Achievements to highlight and comment favourably not only on good      work but also on positive behaviour or actions or positive attitudes.
  • Using praise pads or short      notes to parents informing them specifically of some action or achievement      which deserves praise.
  • Head teacher award stickers as      an ongoing acknowledgement of improvement, effort or achievement.
  • Recognition and celebration of      achievements through the school website and local newspapers and by      displaying photographs or certificates in the school

 

INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR and SANCTIONS

Should inappropriate behaviour occur then sanctions will be applied. Sanctions are intended to encourage appropriate and acceptable behaviour to our pupils, to help them understand the effects their wrong choice can have on others and to help them understand that if they choose not to follow agreed rules there are consequences.

 

Promoting Positive Behaviour in the Classroom and on Class Trips

In each class time will be given to the formulation of rules to ensure the rights above are respected and that positive behaviour is promoted. Throughout the year these rules are revisited in the main school as part of the RE, PDMU and Emotional Intelligence programme.

These rules will be agreed after consultation with the class and displayed prominently in each classroom. Arrangements for rewarding children in line with the programme are set out below;

  • Each class will operate a      ‘Marbles in the Jar’ type reward.
  • When a child does something      good, be it through work or behaviour, they will place a marble in the      jar.
  • When the jar is filled by the      class they will get a class reward of their choice on Friday afternoon      between 1.00 and 2.00pm.
  • The reward system in each class      is structured in such a way that there is a reward at least every two      weeks but preferably weekly.
  • The pupils will be consulted to      decide what their reward will be.
  • Rewards do not need to be      curriculum based.

Unfortunately, there are times when a child may choose not to follow the agreed rules. At the beginning of the school year each child will be informed of the consequences for their choices and what sanctions will be put in place. These will be presented to every class and displayed prominently as a permanent visual reminder.

In P4 to P7 classes the following consequences will be applied when class rules are not followed;

3. Red Card – Consequence is miss break time and a letter home informing parents of inappropriate behaviour. If the sanction is given in the afternoon then it will carry over to the following day.

In P1-P3 the following consequences will be applied when class rules are not followed;

  3. 2nd Warning Card
  4. Red Card - Consequence is miss      break time and a letter home informing parents of inappropriate behaviour.      If the sanction is given in the afternoon then it will carry over to the      following day.

Sanctions

In the main school, the main sanction for persistent inappropriate behaviour in class is the red card, resulting in withdrawal of break time. A child will never be kept in school during lunch time.

 

Arrangements for Pupils who have withdrawal of break time.

Children who have had removal of break-time play will be supervised in the computer suite. Teachers will provide this supervision with the arrangement being

  • P1-P3 children will be asked to      sit quietly
  • P4 - simplified Think Sheet
  • P5-P7 – Complete the think      sheet

A general letter at the bottom of the think sheet will be completed and sent home to parents. Parents are expected to discuss the inappropriate behaviour with their child, sign and return the think sheet. If it is not returned a phone call to parents will be made to ensure that they are aware of the child’s behaviour and the sanction applied.

Sanctions for incomplete homework

If homework is not completed a yellow card will be given to a child unless a parent has provided a reason, either written or verbal and this card will be part of the normal classroom behaviour programme. This homework must be completed on the following night.

If homework is not completed the following night a red card, with loss of break time privileges, and a letter home will be given. Both nights homework must be caught up on. If this is not done it expected that the homework will be completed over the weekend.

 

 

Straight red card offences

The following, whilst not exhaustive, are considered to be straight red card offences in the classroom,

  • Violent behaviour
  • Causing physical harm to      another pupil or member of staff
  • Answering back staff cheekily
  • Damaging school or other      people’s property
  • Spitting
  • Theft
  • Defiant behaviour

The consequence is that a child will be sent to the principal and a letter will be sent to the parent detailing the behaviour. Appropriate sanctions will be agreed at the meeting. Should there be theft or damage to property parents may be approached to finance repair or replacement.

Behaviour in the school playground

Behaviour in the school playgrounds will be reviewed in the 2010/11 school year to ensure there are agreed rules, rewards and sanctions. Whilst this review is in progress pupils are expected to

  • Encourage others to join in      their games
  • Line up quickly and quietly      when the bell rings
  • Treat other pupils and staff      with respect
  • Follow the directions of      members of staff
  • Look after play equipment and      use it safely
  • Use kind hands and kind words
  • Play safely

Depending on the severity of the inappropriate behaviour the child may,

  • Be given a verbal warning
  • Be told to take time out for a      specific amount of play time.

If the inappropriate behaviour is serious or persistent the pupil will have loss of playtime and will have supervised withdrawal in school premises. The same outline above in ‘Arrangements for Pupils who have withdrawal of break time’ will apply.

 

Behaviour in After-Schools and Breakfast club

In After-Schools and Breakfast clubs pupils will be expected to:

  • Treat other pupils, coaches and staff, with respect
  • Follow the directions of      members of staff and/or coaches
  • Look after equipment and use it      safely
  • Use kind hands and kind words

Depending on the severity of the inappropriate behaviour the child may,

  • Be given a verbal warning
  • Be told to take time out for a      specific amount of play time.

If the inappropriate behaviour is serious or persistent the pupil will not be permitted to attend the After-Schools or Breakfast club.

Persistent inappropriate behaviour

Should any child continually choose not to follow the rules, not respond to the consequences and display continuous inappropriate behaviour the following steps will be taken.

  • Letter to parent inviting them      to meet with the Principal and class teacher.
  • Use of the behaviour book –      specific behaviour targets will be agreed with parent, class teacher and      the principal. Parents will be      regularly kept informed of progress.
  • Should it be felt that the      child has behavioural problems which would benefit from external support      an IEP will be drawn up, the child will be placed on Special Needs      Register and parents informed of targets. This may result in referral to      SEELB, Educational Psychologist and advice sought from SEELB Behaviour      Support Team.
  • Principal may withdraw the      child’s privileges such as membership of clubs, the right to go on certain      visits, exclusion from school teams or attendance at film shows etc.
  • Principal may allocate      After-School Detention, used with the full prior agreement of the parents.

In the unlikely event of no satisfactory resolution of the problem or a total lack of co-operation from the parents the school will exercise the right to suspend a pupil for a definite period under the scheme prepared by the C.C.M.S. It is envisaged that the extreme action of permanent exclusion (expulsion) of a child from the school would rarely be necessary but this power does reside with the Board of Governors under the C.C.M.S. Scheme.

 

PLEASE NOTE THAT A REVISED POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR POLICY AND PROCEDURES WILL BE IN PLACE FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR – PARENTS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH THE DETAILS IN SEPTEMBER 2015.

CHILD PROTECTION

In St. Patrick’s Primary School, the care, welfare and safety of the children in our care is paramount. We recognize that we have pastoral responsibility towards our pupils who have a fundamental right to be protected from harm.

We will take all reasonable steps to ensure that their welfare is safeguarded and their safety preserved.

In St. Patrick’s Primary School the designated teacher who has specific responsibility for child protection is Mr E. Caughey. Miss K. Grant is the Deputy Designated Teacher.

In St. Patrick’s Primary School:

  • We will alert staff to the      signs of possible abuse.
  • When child abuse is      suspected, it is the responsibility of the member of staff who is aware of      the circumstances or suspected circumstances, to notify the designated      teacher.
  • The designated teacher will      ensure that the appropriate reporting and recording procedures are set in      motion as quickly as possible.
  • Any clarification should be      done carefully and sensitively – it is not the responsibility of the staff      to undertake any investigations or to make extensive enquiries of family      or carers.
  • Ancillary staff will report      any suspicions or concerns to the designated teacher.
  • Parents will be notified      about procedures on a regular basis.
  • Children will be advised what      to do in school if they have any concerns about such matters.
  • At all times we will strive      to protect children, while respecting the rights of parents, families,      carers and members of staff.

Identifying Abuse

All school staff, teaching and non- teaching, are aware of their legal responsibility to inform the designated teacher of any suspicion that they may have regarding abuse of a child.

Procedures to be followed if a complaint is made against a member of staff or the Principal

If a complaint is made about possible abuse against a member of staff or the Principal there are clear procedures which are set out in the Child Protection Policy. These will be strictly adhered to.

Voluntary action within the school

All parents or volunteers coming into the school to help out in a voluntary capacity will be required to complete an application form, consenting to a criminal records check to be carried out.

Access NI will be forwarded completed forms and will request criminal record checks on our behalf.

Information on how to make a complaint about possible child abuse

If you wish to make known to staff any concerns you may have concerning the safety of your (or another) child you should do the following:

Anti-Bullying

In St. Patrick’s Primary School we believe all members of the school community have a right to work in a secure and caring environment. Each member of the community has the responsibility to contribute to the protection and maintenance of such an environment.

In St. Patrick’s Primary School we believe it is the responsibility of all involved in the school community to work together to combat and eradicate bullying in our school

This community is completely opposed to any form of bullying and will not tolerate it.

 

Clear procedures are set out in our anti-bullying policy. This is available from the school. Your views on our policy are always valued.

DRUGS EDUCATION IN CONTEXT

Our school believes that the misuse of drugs endangers not only our pupils but also affects the wider community in which we live. It is the school's responsibility to ensure the child's health and safety while in our care and we also strive to promote their personal and social wellbeing. Drug misuse undermines this and hinders the development of the young person.

A drugs policy is in place and can be made available to parents on request. As part of the consultation process parents are encouraged to access the drugs policy and provide their views and opinions.

The policy provides a focus for the school to consider how drugs education should be implemented and developed within the curriculum, and outlines the roles, responsibilities and legal duties of key staff. From a wider perspective, it gives parents and the local community an opportunity for involvement in drug issues. The policy forms an integral part of our existing health education and personal and social education programmes, and the drug education programme complements this.

THE MANAGEMENT OF PRESCRIBED MEDICINES

Policy on the Administration of Medicines during school hours;

 

  1. 5.1.The Board of Governors and staff of St. Patrick’s Primary School wish to ensure that pupils with medication needs receive appropriate care and support at school. The Principal will accept responsibility in principle for members of the school staff giving or supervising pupils taking prescribed medication during the school day where those members of staff have volunteered to do so. Please note that parents should keep their children at home if acutely unwell or infectious.

 

  1. 5.2.Parents are responsible for providing the Principal with comprehensive information regarding the pupil’s condition and medication.
  1. 5.3.Prescribed medication will not be accepted in school without complete written and signed instructions from the parent. (An AM2 form is available from the school and should be completed)
  1. 5.4.Staff will not give a non prescribed medicine to a child unless there is specific prior written permission from the parents.
  1. 5.5.Only reasonable quantities of medication should be supplied to the school (for example, a maximum of four weeks supply at any one time).
  1. 5.6.Where the pupil travels on school transport with an escort, parents should ensure the escort has written instructions relating to any medication sent with the pupil, including medication for administration during respite care.
  1. 5.7.Each item of medication must be delivered to the Principal or Authorised Person, in normal circumstances by the parent, in a secure and labelled container as originally dispensed. Each item of medication must be clearly labelled with the following information:

Frequency of administration

Date of Dispensing

Storage requirements (if important)

Expiry date

The school will not accept items of medication in unlabelled containers.

  1. 5.8Medication will be kept in a secure place, out of the reach of pupils. Unless otherwise indicated all medication to be administered in school will be kept in a locked medicine cabinet.

1.5.9.   The school will keep records, which they will have available for parents.

  1. 5.10If children refuse to take medicines, staff will not force them to do so, and will inform the parents of the refusal, as a matter of urgency, on the same day. If a refusal to take medicines results in an emergency, the school’s emergency procedures will be followed.
  1. 5.11It is the responsibility of parents to notify the school in writing if the pupil’s need for medication has ceased.
  1. 5.12It is the parents’ responsibility to renew the medication when supplies are running low and to ensure that the medication supplied is within its expiry date.   The school will not make changes to dosages without parental instructions.
  1. 5.13School staff will not dispose of medicines. Medicines, which are in use and in date, should be collected by the parent at the end of each term. Date expired medicines or those no longer required for treatment will be returned immediately to the parent for transfer to a community pharmacist for safe disposal
  1. 5.14For each pupil with long term or complex medication needs, the Principal, will ensure that a Medication Plan and Protocol is drawn up, in conjunction with the appropriate health professionals.
  1. 5.15Where it is appropriate to do so, pupils will be encouraged to administer their own medication, if necessary under staff supervision. Parents will be asked to confirm in writing if they wish their child to carry their medication with them to school. (An AM3 form can be obtained from the school and must be completed and returned).
  1. 5.16Staff who volunteer to assist in the administration of medication will receive appropriate training/guidance through arrangements made with the School Health Service.
  1. 5.17The school will make every effort to continue the administration of medication to a pupil whilst on trips away from the school premises, even if additional arrangements might be required. However, there may be occasions when it may not be possible to include a pupil on a school trip if appropriate supervision cannot be guaranteed.

THE MANAGEMENT OF SOLVENTS

 

Pupils are not permitted to bring solvents or aerosols to school. This includes tippex fluid, tippex thinners, glue, marker pens and spray deodorants. Pupils are permitted to bring felt pens to school.

All members of staff are responsible for the safe storage and usage of solvents in their class. Where possible they should be stored in a cupboard when not in use. The caretaker should also ensure that solvents are kept in a secure place.

 

Emergency Use of Inhalers

There has been a recent change in legislation which allows schools to hold an emergency salbutamol inhaler to be used if a pupil’s prescribed inhaler and spare inhaler are not available (for example, because they are broken, or empty). St Patrick’s will hold an emergency inhaler in school from 1st September 2015. It is important for parents continue to ensure that they follow the procedures detailed above if their child has asthma and provide appropriate inhalers to the school.

 

Parents should complete a consent form giving the school permission for an emergency inhaler to be administered. These are available from reception.

CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION

 

I am sure you can appreciate that when an emergency arises, we must be in a position to respond to individual child needs. When you enrolled your child in St Patrick’s you completed a data capture sheet which provided the school with a range of important information.   The information you provide on this data sheet is held in confidence but will guide us in relation to those we need to contact regarding any concerns about your child.

Due to current Human Rights legislation and the Children (NI) Order 1995 as well as child protection requirements, it is essential that the school keep up to date information on file. I am placing the obligation upon you to provide us with whatever information is necessary to meet these expectations. Parents are therefore asked that they advise the Principal if there are any Court Orders or parental responsibility issues relating to your child- e.g. Parental Responsibility Order, Residence Order, Non Molestation Order, etc.

It must be emphasized that it is essential that those with parental responsibility make the school aware of any changes in contact telephone numbers, circumstances, parental access or court orders as they occur during the school year. All such information will be treated with utmost confidence and will only be disclosed to those staff who need to know to ensure your child’s safety and well-being at all times.

As the Non-Molestation Order gives legal directions regarding exclusion of a certain individual, it is vital for the school to have a copy of this order to keep on your child’s file. This enables us to act quickly should such a situation arise.

USE OF CHILDREN’S PHOTOGRAPHS/IMAGES

In line with Child Protection policy, it is important that parent’s permission is sought with regard to the use of children’s photographs/images in connection with the school.

Children’s photographs/images and video have been used in the past, in a number of ways;

  • Photographs of children are regularly taken in school, on school trips, in sports groups, during school productions and on other special occasions. Many of these photographs are used in school publications, the school website and displayed within the school. We will be introducing a school Facebook page and images of children involved in school related activities are included on it.
  • Occasionally local newspapers come to school to photograph the children making charity presentations or on other special occasions. These are then published in the particular newspaper.
  • At school productions, e.g. Christmas concerts, parents wish to video the performances.

In the present climate, parental permission for their child’s photograph/ image to be used in any of the above ways is required.

To this end I would ask you to complete the accompanying form, at the back of this booklet and return it as soon as possible (This applies to parents of children enrolling on the school in the 2015/16 school year and to parents who wish to change their levels of consent).

Permission is also sought from parents when their child enrolls in P1 for web publication of their work, photographs and video recordings. Use of internet permission is also required. Should you wish to change the level of permission at any time during your child’s school life please request a new consent form from the school.
